There’s no denying that Steph Curry changed the game of basketball, with three-pointers becoming much more of a necessity for NBA teams rather than just a specialized skill after Steph’s mastery of the trey showed everyone how truly devastating it could be when utilized by the right sharpshooter.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski thinks there’s a player in the NFL right now that has and will continue to have the same effect in the NFL as Steph Curry has had on basketball, and that’s Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Though it seems like common sense to say that a player like the 28-year-old Mahomes, who has played for seven seasons with the Chiefs and already has three Super Bowl rings to his name, is a game-changing NFL player, it’s the unexpected feats such as completing a behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce and players trying to emulate Mahomes’ style as a result that truly solidify Stefanski’s claims.
“You know, it’s funny, it’s almost like — you know how Steph Curry changed basketball? I think Mahomes is changing football,” Stefanski said in a Tuesday radio interview with 92.3 The Fan. “You watch quarterbacks come out and play that style, they comport themselves like him. So I would not be surprised if you started seeing that around, certainly, our league. You’re going to see kids in high school trying it.
“Now, they better complete it, or they’re going to hear from their head coach.”
Tight-end Travis Kelce said he knew that Patrick Mahomes was going to be special from the way he could dissect the Chiefs’ defense in practice even during his first year with the team.
“The s**t he was doing in those practices was mind-blowing,” Kelce said in a recent sit down with the Pardon My Take podcast. “He had no, like, filter. He was just out there like, ‘oh this doesn’t matter’. I could just throw it over here. The defense is just demoralized in practice. They’re like, ‘what the f**k, this kid’s dicing us up right now’.”
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in a 25-22 overtime win in the 2024 Super Bowl. They will defend their title in Week 1 at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, September 5th at 7:20 PM EST.
