Drew McIntyre, long known as āThe Scottish Warriorāāa tough, honorable fighter who proudly embraced his Scottish heritage by wearing a kilt and wielding a claymore sword during his entrancesāhas spent over a decade establishing himself in WWE. His accomplishments include two WWE Championship reigns, one of which came in a memorable victory over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36.
More recently, McIntyre has undergone a striking character transformation. The turning point came with the return of CM Punk, igniting a bitter feud that saw McIntyre fully embrace a heel persona. His promos became more aggressive, raw, and emotionally chargedāpunctuated by the now-infamous line, āI prayed for this,ā referencing Punkās injury. Behind the scenes, McIntyre has openly reflected on feeling creatively limited under former WWE chairman Vince McMahon. However, with Triple H now leading creative, he believes he has the freedom to fully express his character and tap into new levels of storytelling.
āFor Vince, I think for me personally, he had a certain image of me, and he was always looking to protect me as this warrior character,ā McIntyre said on a recent episode of Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast. āIf I went to try something outside the box, the stuff Iām doing now, for me personally, it probably wouldnāt happen just because he was like, āNo, this is my Drew. This is my warrior. This is how I see it.āā
While the “Scottish Warrior” persona brought McIntyre considerable success, heās expressed gratitude for the creative shift under Triple Hābelieving itās allowed him to showcase more of his authentic self.
āHunter was very much of the mindset, weāre going to try something different,ā McIntyre continued. āWeāre going to try this and let you be yourself and let this personality that he knew I had shine. And from the second we had our first conversation when he took over, itās been exactly that.ā
