It’s a well-known fact that Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns for the undisputed WWE Universal Championship will be the main event on Night 2 of WrestleMania 39, and while it would be the idyllic storybook ending for Cody Rhodes to unseat Reigns from his (as of this writing) 939+ day reign as the dual heavyweight title holder, the outcome for the match still isn’t certain.
According to WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett however, “there’s only one finish” that he thinks makes sense when it comes to who should take the win in the Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns match.
“Cody. And they positioned it — yes it’s lineage and winning a title that his father never won, that’s emotional,” Jarrett said on his My World podcast. “Obviously the story at AEW goes without saying. That is a part of this story, and him going back, the opportunity and now on the opposite side of the fence, [Roman’s] a guy that hasn’t been beat in three years. You don’t really get those opportunities to come around. There’s only one finish. I’ll say this. If Roman didn’t do the honors, I truly believe it would hurt Roman worse than it would hurt Cody. I do.”
Double J believes that the Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns match at WrestleMania 39 is a rare opportunity to pass the torch and establish a new face for the company in a way that hasn’t been available since the formative days of John Cena as a championship caliber superstar.
“There is no doubt in my mind,” Jarrett continued, “and look, you can get all kinds of metrics and however you want to slice it, but a big show and a big stage, and look, you can say fundamentals and basics and building blocks, you can put all of it, all your eggs in one basket, but I don’t remember a time, and I’m sure maybe a Cena in the early days, but I don’t remember a time off the top of my head that the industry had the opportunity.”
