Brian Hoyer on why Rob Gronkowski was a better tight end than Travis Kelce

When it comes to discussions of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski are at the top of the list. But who was better between the two of them?

Former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer, who played alongside Gronk believes his answer might be slightly biased, but that Rob Gronkowski was a better tight end than Travis Kelce.

“Having played with him, maybe I’m a little biased, but [Gronkowski is] the greatest tight end of all time,” said Hoyer. “Not only because of his size, speed, and when you think of a tight end’s ability to run routes and catch. But, because he was such a great blocker that teams had to honor that. And I think that’s what made him so dynamic.

“We look at Travis Kelce today, phenomenal tight end, but really, Travis isn’t blocking anybody. Rob would block like he was the right tackle. …Rob really changed the game in that matter because he was a lineman, who was the premier pass catcher at the same time.”

With last year’s win in Super Bowl LVIII, Kelce helped secure a third Super Bowl championship for the Chiefs. Gronkowski has four Super Bowl championship rings, three during his tenure with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In his eleven seasons with the Chiefs, the 34-year-old Kelce has 907 catches, 11,328 receiving yards and 77 touchdowns. He has been selected to play in 8 Pro Bowls.
