Mercedes Mone on why she left WWE: ‘Nobody knows the story because I haven’t said anything, and I’m not going to say anything because that’s just the classy boss that I am’

The real reason for why Mercedes Mone, the professional wrestler formerly known as Sasha Banks, left the WWE back in May of 2022 (alongside fellow WWE superstar Naomi), is still unknown, with purported reasons ranging from creative differences with Vince McMahon to dissatisfaction with the intended terms of a contract renewal — and that will likely be the case for the foreseeable future, as Mercedes herself has no intention on spilling the tea.

Even after signing with New Japan Pro Wrestling in January and defeating KAIRI for the IWGP Women’s Championship in a 26-minute-match in February, recent comments made by Mercedes Mone on why she left the WWE reinforce the notion that the real reason may not be known for quite some time, as Mercedes doesn’t plan on revealing anything or badmouthing her former company either.

“First of all, nobody knows the story. You don’t know the story, but you’re reading whatever you want to read and believe whatever you want to believe,” Mercedes said in a Q&A Session at Planet Comicon Kansas City. “Nobody knows the story because I haven’t said anything, and I’m not going to say anything because that’s just the classy boss that I am. The CEO.”

When asked if she had any intention to return to the WWE following Vince McMahon stepping down and relinquishing creative control of the company to Triple H last summer following allegations of sexual misconduct, Banks stated that the ball was in WWE’s court.

“It’s up to them,” she continued. “It’s up to Dakota (Kai). It’s up to everybody else to come back. That’s great for them. That’s awesome. That’s their dream, but I went after mine, which was going to Japan. You have to follow your heart and follow your soul and follow your dreams, and this was always a dream of mine that I never got to accomplish.”

Mercedes related that wrestling in NJPW and outside of the WWE was a dream that she’d been hoping to achieve for quite some time after nearly a decade in the WWE.

“As I’m growing in my career, I’d been in the WWE for almost ten years,” she added. “I had to have a change. I had to feel something different in my heart and my soul. I had to go after a whole new dream and a whole new chapter and a whole new destiny for me, and this is what I wanted for me, and this is what I wanted to make happen for me, that’s it. This is what I’m going for. This is my dream.”
