When it comes to well-known sports stars, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is right up there near the top of the list, especially after the 34-year-old helped his team secure their third Super Bowl championship with a victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII. Or maybe we should have phrased that “is at the top of the list” when it comes to well-known sports stars, especially after he started dating pop icon Taylor Swift, a romance which has opened Kelce and the NFL to a whole new demographic of fans — the zealous “Swifties.”
Kelce himself admits the demonstrable effect his relationship with Taylor Swift has had on his life, even in the business sense.
“It’s crazy what it opens up, opportunity-wise,” Travis’ brother Jason said on a recent episode of Shaquille O’Neal’s The Big Podcast with Shaq. “It’s crazy to feel how much joy you bring people, or how much you affect people’s daily lives.”
Jason too has felt the effects of his brother dating Swift, from he and his wife joining Swift in the stands while rooting on Travis to Swift introducing him to popular musicians like Ice Spice and even legendary Beatles singer Paul McCartney.
Of course, all that amplified celebrity comes with a price. Kelce has become a name more firmly entrenched in the sports and celebrity zeitgeist, and has seen a subsequent boost in merchandise sales and ticket sales (from Swifties wanting to share the same arena as Taylor, who diligently attends Kelce’s games), but his relationship with Swift has also caused some inconveniences in his life.
“Travis knows better than I do,” Jason replied when asked which “drawbacks” being in Swift’s circle causes. “He had to completely move out of his house. People were just staying by his house. The first day he moved into the new house … a gated community, someone knocks on a window of the house.”
Jason continued, “We’ve always been big in the football world, Travis especially. The Taylor world and the pop culture world, that’s a whole different level. It’s a new demographic that wasn’t there before.”
