Gunther on facing Brock Lesnar post WrestleMania 39 rumors: “I always saw Brock as my final boss”

Gunther addressed rumors that he was slated to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39 in a recent interview with Daily Mail, and reiterated the sentiment that Lesnar is his “end boss” as well.

“Of course, I heard something about it,” Gunther told Alex McCarthy of Daily Mail. “I always saw Brock as my final boss. I always get portrayed as that; as the NXT UK Champion, the Intercontinental Champion, I was like the final boss of that division. And Brock, for a long time, was the final boss of the whole company. So I always saw myself in my future to be in a similar position to him, and to be that you’ve got to get in the ring with that guy. We’ll see if there’s a chance for it to happen again. I’m more than up for it. How the situation is exactly right now, I’m really not that informed about it, to be honest. I think we had that one face-off in the Royal Rumble, the reaction that was there, and that was a confirmation for me.”

Gunther with the WWE Intercontinental championship/WWE

According to some insiders, Gunther was set to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39, though the plans obviously changed to Lesnar vs. Omos as the final card was set. The Gunther vs. Brock Lesnar matchup was first hinted at during the 2023 Royal Rumble, where Gunther put on a record-setting, 1 hour, 11 minutes and 40 second in-ring performance. Gunther and Lesnar stood face-to-face in an epic staredown during the latter portion of the Rumble, a teaser for what should be an even more epic matchup if it ever comes to fruition in the future.

What do you think of the comments made by Gunther on facing Brock Lesnar? Will the matchup still be as vaunted if there’s no championship belt on the line, particularly now that Gunther lost the WWE Intercontinental championship (after holding it for a record-setting 666 days) to Sami Zayn? Gunther may be setting his sights on an even more lofty accolade than the WWE Intercontinental championship as he clashes with “Main Event” Jey Uso next week on Monday Night Raw in the King of the Ring tournament finals.
